The Fremantle Football Club was officially established on July 21, 1994, after the AFL announced on December 14, 1993, that a new Western Australian team would join the league. Originally called the "Fremantle Sharks," the club made its AFL debut in the 1995 season. They became the second Western Australian team in the national competition, following the West Coast Eagles, who entered in 1987. The club's first training session took place on October 31, 1994, at Fremantle Oval.
The Fremantle Dockers are commonly known as the 'Freo Dockers,' 'Dockers,' or simply 'Freo.' During Indigenous rounds, they adopt the name 'Walyalup,' honouring the traditional Aboriginal name for the area. The men's team wears Purple and White, while the AFLW team incorporates Purple, White, and Crimson. Interestingly, the original colours announced in 1994 included Purple, Red, Green, and White, but research in 2009 showed that members found red and green "fragmenting and distracting." This led to the simplified colour scheme we see today, reflecting the club's commitment to "simplicity, authenticity and strength."
The 'Dockers' name pays tribute to Fremantle's maritime heritage and the hardworking dock workers of the port city. This name faced a legal challenge in 1997 from Levi Strauss & Co., makers of Dockers clothing, but fan loyalty was so strong that a new arrangement allowed the club to keep using it. The logo has evolved significantly since 1995, with major changes in 1997, 2011 (introducing the "Simplified Anchor"), and 2013 when the current shield-based design was adopted. The 2011 design cleverly incorporated three 'Vs' whose apex represented the "crown" of an anchor, linking modern design with the club's maritime heritage.
The men's team currently plays at the impressive Optus Stadium in Perth, which holds between 60,000 and 61,266 spectators. They've called this state-of-the-art venue home since 2018. Previously, they played at the WACA Ground from 1995-2000 (hosting 72 AFL matches) and then primarily at Subiaco Oval from 1995-2017. The AFLW team plays at the historic Fremantle Oval, which has a 10,000 capacity and has been Fremantle's main football venue since 1897. Training and administration now take place at Cockburn ARC, where the club relocated in 2017 after spending its first 22 years based at Fremantle Oval.
The men's team has never won an AFL Premiership, making them one of only three active clubs (alongside Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney) yet to claim the ultimate prize. However, they did achieve a minor premiership in 2015, finishing first after the home-and-away season. Their closest brush with glory came in 2013 when they reached their first and only Grand Final, ultimately losing to Hawthorn by 15 points. The path to that Grand Final included a memorable preliminary final victory over reigning premiers Sydney Swans, by 25 points.
The Dockers' finals journey began in 2003 when they first qualified, finishing fifth but losing their elimination final. A breakthrough came in 2006 with their first finals victory, defeating Melbourne in a semi-final at Subiaco Oval after finishing third with a club-record 15 wins. They won their first away finals game in 2012, beating Geelong by 16 points at the MCG. The club has made finals in 2003, 2006, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2022, with recent highlights including a thrilling comeback against the Western Bulldogs.
The Fremantle AFLW team has been in the competition since its inception in 2017, currently coached by Lisa Webb and captained by Ange Stannett. Their most successful season was 2020, when they went undefeated, though the season was cancelled due to COVID-19 without a premiership being awarded. In 2024, they finished fifth on the ladder. The team has dominated the Western Derby against West Coast, remaining undefeated in their first seven encounters. Star player Kiara Bowers has been exceptional, winning three club Fairest and Best medals and the league's Best and Fairest award in 2021.
Several players stand out as club legends. Matthew Pavlich, often called the "Prince of Perth," is a six-time All-Australian who captained the club for nine years and remains the all-time leading goalkicker with 700 goals. Nat Fyfe, a dual Brownlow Medallist and three-time Doig Medallist, is renowned for his courage and midfield brilliance. David Mundy holds the games record with 376 appearances and is also an All-Australian. Aaron Sandilands dominated as a ruckman with 271 games and multiple All-Australian selections. Other legends include Hall of Fame inductee Peter Bell, defender Luke McPharlin, and AFLW star Kiara Bowers.
Nat Fyfe stands alone as the club's only Brownlow Medal winner, claiming the prestigious award twice. This achievement places him among the AFL's elite and provides significant recognition for a club still chasing team success. Multiple players have earned All-Australian selection, including Pavlich (six times), Sandilands, Mundy, Bell, and McPharlin. The Doig Medal, awarded to the club's best and fairest player, has been won by several legends, with Fyfe claiming it three times.
