About this Event

Everything You Need to Know about the Gold Coast Suns This Season

Another season, another year without finals for the Gold Coast Suns. But there might be a glimmer of hope on the horizon. With Stuart Dew out and Damien Hardwick stepping in for 2024, could things finally be looking up for the Suns?

Let's review the Gold Coast Suns 2023 AFL season

With a finals appearance in their sights, finishing 15th and watching coach Dew get the boot definitely counts as underachieving. They had a rough start, winning only one of their first five games. They did manage a couple of back-to-back victories in Darwin against the Western Bulldogs and Adelaide, but consistency was a major issue.

After Dew was shown the door, interim coach Steven King did manage to rally the team a bit. Wins at home against St Kilda and Brisbane kept their finals hopes alive up until round 21. But four straight losses at the end – three of those on the road – dashed any lingering hopes of making the eight.

There were a few highlights, though. The forward line showed promise, with Ben King racking up 40 goals from 20 games and Jack Lukosius close behind with 39. Levi Casboult also chipped in, and they've got players like Mabior Chol and Sam Day ready to step up, so they’re looking solid in the tall forward department.

Sam Flanders was a standout once King took over. He got more midfield time and ended up being the Suns' top disposal-getter in five of the last seven games.

Losing skipper Touk Miller to a meniscus tear for 11 games after round six was a major blow. Even with talented guys like Noah Anderson and Matt Rowell, the midfield just couldn't hold it together consistently.

With their season on the line, sitting at 9-10 going into round 21, those four consecutive defeats to Adelaide, Sydney, Carlton, and North Melbourne were a harsh reality check. Their 15th-place finish on the ladder was pretty telling.

Noah Anderson is a shining light

Earning a spot in the All-Australian 44-man squad, Anderson averaged 27 disposals and six clearances a game, he’s got the potential to upgrade his game even further under Hardwick’s guidance. And there’s hope that other midfield talents like Rowell and Flanders will rise alongside him.

The Gold Coast Suns AFL 2024 season so far

Damien Hardwick’s first season at the helm of the Gold Coast Suns has been a rollercoaster, and while there's been a noticeable improvement, the Suns' hopes of making the finals are being threatened by a poor away record.

Playing at home, the Suns have been stellar. They've gone undefeated at Carrara (5-0) and have also won both their games in Darwin. Their aggressive playstyle and willingness to take the game forward have shown positive signs. The team ranks sixth in both time in forward half differential and inside 50 differential, which highlights their ability to control the game in the attacking half.

Their away record, however, is a nightmare, sitting at 0-6 in games outside their strongholds. They won't be taken seriously as a finals contender until they can figure out how to win on the road. Another area that needs improvement is its efficiency at 50. Key forwards like Ben King, Jack Lukosius, and Jed Walter should be taking more than ten marks inside 50 per game, yet they rank 16th in the competition in this regard.

Noah Anderson and Matt Rowell are the dynamic duo leading the charge. Anderson, an outside player, and Rowell, the hard-at-the-contest midfielder, are a great combo, terrorising opposition teams. Touk Miller complements them well, capable of both offensive brilliance and shutting down key opposition players.

Ben King has been a standout in the forward line with 38 goals, while Jack Lukosius has room to improve, having kicked just 12 goals from 13 games after a stellar 40-goal season last year. Sam Flanders has been a revelation at halfback, averaging 31.4 disposals and 482 meters gained per game. However, he could benefit from taking more aggressive kicks to set the team up better from the back half.

Mac Andrew is developing nicely as a key defender, and Ned Moyle has shown promise as a young ruckman, although the Suns need Jarrod Witts back at full strength to truly complement their midfield.

Game Recap: Greater Western Sydney vs. Gold Coast Suns

Another away game, another tough loss for the Gold Coast Suns. This time, Greater Western Sydney (GWS) handed them a 39-point defeat at Engie Stadium, pushing the Giants closer to a top-four finish while the Suns' finals hopes took another hit.

In blustery conditions, the Suns struggled to find their footing. They had plenty of chances but just couldn’t capitalise, kicking a frustrating 6.14 (50) compared to the Giants' efficient 14.5 (89). The Suns actually led in inside 50s, 66-47, but their inability to convert opportunities into goals was their downfall.

Jesse Hogan was a standout for the Giants, finishing with four goals and six marks. He was instrumental in sharing the ball around and contributed to seven score involvements, making him a constant threat. Brent Daniels celebrated his 100th game in style, kicking two goals and setting the tone for the Giants' forward line. Alongside him, Darcy Jones, Harvey Thomas, and Toby McMullin added spark and kept the pressure on the Suns' defence.

On the Suns' side, it was a different story. Ben King had a day to forget in front of goal, failing to score a major from seven attempts, including six set shots. His miss after the three-quarter time siren from 30 meters out summed up the Suns' day. Sam Flanders was a bright spot, leading the midfield with 43 disposals and nine clearances. David Swallow also turned back the clock with 28 touches, showing his experience.

Lachie Weller made a heartwarming return from his second ACL injury, collecting 16 disposals and kicking a goal. His presence added some much-needed polish to the forward half, and he's expected to bolster the Suns' defence moving forward.

The Suns’ away game woes have now stretched to 435 days, covering all nine away matches this season. Despite their strong home record, their inability to perform on the road is a major concern. The Suns' overall record is now 7-6, with a percentage of 107.9, and they sit in the middle of the pack.

Why Ben Ainsworth chose to re-sign with the Suns

Ben Ainsworth, one of the Gold Coast Suns' dynamic forwards, has decided to extend his stay with the club, signing a new four-year deal that keeps him in Gold Coast colours until the end of 2028. After seriously considering offers from rival clubs, Ainsworth ultimately chose to remain loyal to the Suns.

Ainsworth, who was the No.4 pick in the 2016 AFL Draft, cited his long-term commitment to the Suns as a significant factor in his decision. Despite the allure of returning to his home state of Victoria, with Essendon leading the suitors, Ainsworth couldn't see himself wearing any other jersey. However, the decision wasn't made lightly. Ainsworth sought advice from teammates Rory Atkins and Brandon Ellis, who had gone through similar free agency processes, as well as coach Damien Hardwick. Ainsworth has undergone shoulder surgery and will be out for the remainder of the season.
