The Big Guide for the Ultimate Brisbane Lions Fan

The Big Guide for the Ultimate Brisbane Lions Fan

In 2023, the Brisbane Lions didn’t quite snag that shiny premiership cup, falling short by just four points against Collingwood in the Grand Final. It stung, no doubt about it. But let’s not drown in sorrow because there’s a silver lining in them stormy clouds.

The Lions treated their fans to a spectacle this year. A deep dive into the finals and a stellar home season – it’s the kind of stuff that fuels optimism. A report card? They get a solid A. Not bad at all.

The Sporting News took a magnifying glass to Brisbane’s 2023 season, and the burning question was: Did they over or underachieve? The Lions were aiming high with new blood like Josh Dunkley, and No. 2 pick Will Ashcroft was injected into the midfield, and ex-Hawk Jack Gunston was promising glory. Falling just one goal short of the AFL flag? That’s like acing the semester but missing the valedictorian spot.

Injuries tried to rain on the parade, but Dunkley turned out to be the MVP of the squad, fitting in like a glove. The bloke’s got future-contender written all over him.

The Lions were the second-best team in town

What clicked for these roaring Lions? Well, the Gabba was their fortress. Thirteen home wins, including victories over the big guns like Collingwood, Port Adelaide, and Melbourne, and a jaw-dropping comeback against Carlton. The Gabba was practically their lion’s den – opponents, beware.

But let’s not kid ourselves; it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. That Grand Final had its share of heartbreaks – a dodgy advantage call, a couple of brutal 50-meter penalties, and Bobby Hill turning into a small forward juggernaut for Collingwood. Brandon Starcevich, mate, you’re probably still having nightmares.

Picking the Brisbane Lions’ MVP is like choosing your favourite type of pizza – impossible. Harris Andrews, Lachie Neale, and Charlie Cameron pulled their weight. Neale snagged a surprise Brownlow Medal, making him the man of the moment. Barely edging out his mates, but hey, a win’s a win.

So, Lions faithful, dry those tears, and polish those scarves because 2024 is looming and Queen of Tickets has all of your Brisbane Lions tickets for the season. With Dunkley in the engine room, a fortress called the Gabba, and a hunger for redemption, who knows – next year might just be the Lions’ year to roar.

How’s it going for the Brisbane Lions in 2024 so far?

The offseason for Lions fans has been a rollercoaster of emotions. The Grand Final drama is on repeat in your minds, like a song you can’t shake off. The dread of being runners-up, closer than ever but not close enough. Winners might not get questioned about how they won; it’s all about that ‘yes’ when it comes to Collingwood and 2023.

So, what about 2024? Is it a “new year, new me” scenario for the Lions? Not really. They’re rolling into the next season with the same crew, maybe a bit wiser and definitely hungrier. That sting from almost tasting victory – could that be the secret sauce to push them over the summit this time?

Now, the holidays are done, and it’s back to the grind. AFL players are strapping on their boots, hitting the turf, and getting ready for the 2024 showdown. And you know what they say – this is where premierships are born, where lists come together, and where dreams start turning into reality.

It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster for the Brisbane Lions in 2024 so far. Dreary skies, a soaked Gabba, and a clash against Geelong that ended up being a bit of a washout. Geelong snagged the win, 9.9 (63) to 4.13 (37), leaving us Lions fans feeling a bit soggy.

The rain wasn’t the only thing pouring down, though. Superstar defender Tom Stewart got sidelined with a concussion, adding insult to injury for both teams. Now, after that disappointment, we were hoping for a redemption arc against Melbourne, especially after that impressive win. But alas, the footy gods had other plans. Despite our Lions roaring loudly, the weather gods didn’t play nice, and we couldn’t quite find our footing in the rain. Melbourne took advantage of the soggy conditions, and we lost a key player to concussion. Ouch.

Looking ahead, we’ve got some tough battles on the horizon. Richmond’s up next, and then we’ll be facing off against the Giants. Coach Chris Fagan’s probably scratching his head, trying to figure out where the team went wrong.

Let’s talk Brisbane Lions players

First up, we’ve got Eric Hipwood. One kick short, and suddenly, the spotlight’s on him. Does he owe the team one? Well, as much as anyone who fell below par in that final clash. It’s harsh to point fingers, but the guy’s probably itching to make amends.

Then there’s Joe Daniher – the man who grew up in 2023. No longer the goofy kid from Essendon, he’s a seasoned player with a taste for goals and a knack for ruck duties. Injury-free and hitting the big 3-0, Daniher’s like a fine wine, getting better with time.

Keidean Coleman, the young gun, hit his ceiling in the first half of the Grand Final. But the second half? Not so much. Lessons were learned, and now, in 2024, the question is: Can he break through those defensive shackles and keep soaring?

Cam Rayner’s got us wondering – should he spend more time on the ball? In those crucial moments when you need someone to power through and make things happen, Rayner might just be the answer. A bit like Jake Stringer for Essendon in 2021, bringing that punch and power to the midfield could be Rayner’s calling.

And then, there’s Tom Doedee, returning from a knee reconstruction. The Lions might have to be patient – expectations could be high, but ACL recovery has its stages. Let’s not hitch our wagons just yet; 2025 might be the year of Doedee.

So, Lions fans, buckle up for 2024. The journey continues, and who knows, this might just be the year the Lions roar to the top. After all, it’s a long season, and as they say, it’s not about how you start; it’s about how you finish.

The Brisbane Lions ruck conundrum

Just when you think things can’t get more chaotic, Oscar McInerney gets sidelined with a concussion at halftime. McInerney took a nasty knock to the eye in the first half, and although they patched him up, he couldn’t pass the concussion test.

So, what’s a team to do when their main tapster gets sidelined? Well, they had to get creative. Enter Joe Daniher, who got thrown into the ruck for the rest of the game. Now, Daniher’s no stranger to getting his hands dirty, but it’s not exactly where you’d expect to find a key forward.

Without McInerney, Brisbane’s attacking options took a hit, and they were left scrambling for support in the ruck. Darcy Gardiner and Jarrod Berry were mentioned as possible backups, but let’s face it, the lion’s share of the responsibility fell on Daniher’s shoulders.

In the end, Daniher did what he could, racking up 13 hit-outs and 17 disposals, but it was a tough night all around, especially with no goals to show for it.

Now, here’s hoping ‘Big O’ makes a speedy recovery because the Lions could use his towering presence back on the field. And if he’s out for a bit, well, it looks like Darcy Fort might have to step up to the plate next time around.

Losing three out of their last four games at the Gabba

This is definitely not the kind of home advantage they’re used to. And let’s not forget, last year, they were practically untouchable on their home turf. Coach Chris Fagan isn’t throwing in the towel just yet. Sure, things might not look great right now, sitting at 2-4, but he’s not hitting the panic button.

In his own words, Fagan acknowledges the challenge they’re facing, saying, “We created a bit of a fortress for ourselves, and right now that’s being challenged.” But he’s not dwelling on the negatives. Instead, he’s keeping the faith and staying positive. After all, he’s seen his Lions rise from tough spots before.

He’s got a point when he talks about last season. Remember Carlton, Sydney, and the Giants? They all showed that it’s premature to count a team out after just six rounds. Sometimes, it just takes a bit of time for things to click into place.

Fagan’s not making excuses, either. He’s giving credit where it’s due, acknowledging that the Lions haven’t been at their best, but they’re not far off. And hey, in sports, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. It’s all part of the game.

2024’s big Brisbane Lions controversy

The Brisbane Lions have been quick to squash any rumours of a rift among their players, particularly stemming from an off-season trip to the US. Reports had surfaced suggesting that personal relationships took a hit after messages from a WhatsApp group accidentally made their way into the public eye due to a player’s iCloud syncing.

However, Danny Daly, the Lions’ general manager of football, stepped up to bat, denying vehemently that the trip had caused any fractures within the playing group. He made it clear that there were no crisis meetings and that the issues reported were not discussed among the club’s leadership. Daly emphasised his trust in the players and stated that none of them had breached club or AFL rules during the trip.

Both co-captains, Harris Andrews and Lachie Neale, also chimed in to deny any ongoing issues within the team. Neale, who was part of the group that travelled to the US along with former premiership player Isaac Smith, affirmed that there was no tension among the players and that they remained united.

Despite the unwelcome distraction, the Lions are focused on their game and are determined to improve their performance. Daly acknowledged that while the team has faced challenges and criticism due to their winless start to the season, they are committed to working hard and addressing areas of improvement.
