Coldplay is not just returning to Australia and New Zealand to tour; they’re making history as the first act to play three nights at Eden Park. Learn more.

Coldplay, the iconic British band, is making waves in Australia as they embark on their highly anticipated return to the country. The demand for their concerts in Melbourne has been phenomenal, leading to adding a third and fourth show due to overwhelming pre-sale demand.

The fourth Melbourne show is now confirmed as the final one in Melbourne for this tour. Coldplay had initially scheduled two shows at Marvel Stadium, but the unprecedented demand prompted the addition of extra dates.

Coldplay’s success in WA

Coldplay recently wrapped up a two-night spectacle at Perth’s Optus Stadium, receiving rave reviews from critics and fans alike. Sam Mead, a reviewer from The Music, described the show as “a pure spectacle of a live performance,” praising the band’s energy, hard-hitting grooves, and journey through their extensive 26-year-old catalogue.

A greener tour

The band is set to bring special guests PinkPantheress and Emmanuel Kelly along for the ride during their 2024 tour in Australia. Coldplay’s commitment to sustainability is also notable, with a 47 per cent reduction in carbon emissions on their Music of the Spheres tour. The band’s eco-friendly measures include:

An electric battery system is used to power the entire show.

Employing electric vehicles and alternative fuels.

Reducing waste and plastic.

Funding the planting of over 5 million trees.

The Music of the Spheres World Tour is not just about delivering exceptional performances; it’s also a testament to Coldplay’s dedication to environmental causes. Professor John E. Fernandez of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is closely monitoring the band’s efforts to create a more sustainable touring model.

Coldplay makes history with three consecutive nights at Eden Park in Auckland

The English quartet, led by the charismatic Chris Martin, has left an indelible mark on the music industry since their debut in 2000 with the dreamy ballad “Yellow” from the album Parachutes.

As the band geared up for their sophomore album in 2001, they felt the pressure to surpass or at least match the success of Parachutes. Returning producer Ken Nelson emphasised the need for growth, setting the stage for a breakthrough. The resulting album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, released in 2002, matched and exceeded the expectations, solidifying Coldplay’s position in the music stratosphere.

Reflecting on the classics

A Rush of Blood to the Head featured some of the band’s most beloved tracks, including “In My Place,” “The Scientist,” “Clocks,” “God Put a Smile Upon Your Face,” “Green Eyes,” and the emotionally charged “Politik.” These songs have continued to be staples of Coldplay’s live performances even two decades later, a testament to the album’s enduring impact.

Chris Martin reflects on the album’s evolution, noting that they had been playing some of the songs from A Rush of Blood to the Head during their Parachutes tour. The tragic events of September 11th added a new dimension to the album, with the song “Politik” emerging shortly after the devastating incident. This event marked a turning point for the band, signalling that the second album would be different yet meaningful.

Fast forward to the present day, and Coldplay is embarking on a monumental tour in Australia and New Zealand in 2024. The demand for tickets during the pre-sale period has been described as “unprecedented” by Live Nation, the tour’s producer. Coldplay’s Music Of The Spheres World Tour has already made history, with over 9 million tickets sold since its kickoff in March 2022. The tour’s success has propelled Coldplay to join the ranks of the Rolling Stones as one of the top-grossing tours of all time, surpassing the $500 million mark.
