Macklemore last graced the Australian stage in 2022

Headlining the fifth edition of Fridayz Live alongside renowned artists such as Akon, TLC, and Craig David, Macklemore returned to the studio post-tour, channelling his creative energy into BEN. The album, which features collaborations with artists like Tones And I and DJ Premier, has been met with critical acclaim and described by NME as "handily his best album."

The Music's Tyler Jenke commended Macklemore's latest release, stating, "While Ben boasts tracks like the Tones & I-featuring Chant, or the DJ Premier joint Heroes, it also offers up Maniac – a track about a toxic relationship whose video takes influence from Outkast’s Hey Ya!, which famously also married upbeat hooks with darker lyrics."

The upcoming tour features tracks from BEN and well-known hits

With a huge total of 13.2 billion combined streams, worldwide accolades, and critical acclaim, Macklemore stands as one of the most prominent and successful independent artists of the 21st century.

In addition to the headline shows, Macklemore will be part of the 2024 edition of BASSINTHEGRASS Festival in Darwin on Saturday, 18 May, adding another exciting dimension to his Australian tour. Presented by MG Live and Frontier Touring, Macklemore's 2024 tour is not to be missed, promising unforgettable performances and an immersive musical experience for fans across Australia and New Zealand.

Macklemore's return with his latest album, "Ben"

The new record continues Macklemore’s distinctive style and unapologetic approach to addressing societal issues. A decade after his breakout success with Ryan Lewis and their chart-topping album "The Heist," Macklemore remains a unique force in popular music.

The rapper's journey has been marked by a blend of hip-hop and hipsterdom, capturing the spirit of the post-hipster, post-Obama era. Macklemore's breakout single, "Thrift Shop," from "The Heist," not only showcased his musical prowess but also served as a cultural statement, defining the zeitgeist of the time. The album's success, coupled with hits like "Same Love," a bold anthem against homophobia, solidified Macklemore's place in the evolving landscape of hip-hop.

One notable aspect of Macklemore's career is his role as a white rapper in a predominantly Black genre. His earnest and confessional progressivism, as seen in tracks like "White Privilege," reflects a self-awareness that acknowledges the historical context and racial dynamics within the music industry. Rather than adopting Eminem's tongue-twisting excellence, Macklemore's sincerity is characterised by repentance and a commitment to addressing social issues.

Get ready for the new album on Macklemore’s Australian Tour

Macklemore's signature balance of big, bracing pop and gentle hip-hop throwbacks continues with the track "Heroes," featuring a beat from hip-hop golden age godfather DJ Premier, showcases Macklemore's formative influences and self-deprecating style. The album explores themes ranging from societal critiques, such as in "Grime" with jabs at Big Pharma, to personal struggles, as seen in "Tears," where Macklemore reimagines his history of alcoholism as a dysfunctional love story.

While the album has received mixed reviews, with some praising Macklemore's continued social commentary and others critiquing certain tracks, it's clear that he remains unburdened by expectations. His ability to address issues like smartphone addiction, social media curation, and sobriety with sincerity and self-reflection demonstrates his willingness to explore diverse topics.

Despite Macklemore's ups and downs in critical reception over the years, his impact on listeners remains undeniable. An on-air message during an interview credits Macklemore's music with inspiring an eight-year recovery from drug addiction, highlighting the profound and unexpected impact of his work. In the ever-evolving landscape of music, Macklemore's ability to connect with listeners personally continues to be a defining aspect of his career.
