The West Coast Eagles had a tough 2023 AFL season, finishing at the bottom of the ladder with the dreaded wooden spoon. It was another year plagued by injuries and underwhelming performances from their veteran players. However, amidst the challenges, there were some bright spots that gave fans a glimpse of hope for the future.
Expectations were low after a 17th-place finish in 2022, but the Eagles managed to win just three games this season, dropping to 18th place. Veterans like Elliot Yeo, Luke Shuey, and Shannon Hurn struggled to stay fit, and their absence was felt on the field. The team faced significant challenges, including five losses by over 100 points, with a particularly painful 171-point defeat against Sydney. The fitness and conditioning issues among experienced players, like Jeremy McGovern and Tom Barrass, raised concerns and highlighted the need for changes in the team’s approach.
Oscar Allen was the standout player for West Coast, making a triumphant return after missing the 2022 season with a foot injury. He kicked an impressive 53 goals in 23 matches, proving himself as a powerful forward and reliable goalkicker. His performance was a beacon of hope, suggesting that with the right support, he could become a major force in the AFL.
The team also had moments of competitiveness, notably against Essendon and Adelaide, and secured wins over North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs. These glimpses of potential, along with a strong draft position, give the Eagles a foundation to build on for the coming seasons.

Although Waterman is already contracted until the end of 2025, recent rumours have hinted that he’s been seeking a longer-term deal with a pay bump, especially after reports of interest from Geelong surfaced.
However, Waterman will likely stay after a significant shift recently in the negotiations between Waterman and the club. While Geelong was reportedly offering a five-year deal with attractive terms, it seems that West Coast is eager to retain their star forward.
Waterman’s performance this season has been stellar, with 48 goals in 17 games, earning him a spot among the top contenders in the Coleman Medal race. At 26, he’s proven himself as a key player for the Eagles, especially when he stepped up earlier in the season during Oscar Allen’s absence. If the contract extension goes through, it’ll be a big win for the Eagles as they look to rebuild and strengthen their squad. Keeping Waterman on board ensures that they have a reliable forward presence as they aim for better seasons ahead.
Gaff has been a key player for the Eagles since being selected with the fourth pick in the 2010 National Draft. Over his 14-year career, he has played 278 senior games and has been a two-time All-Australian, known for his hard running on the wing and his instrumental role in taking the club to the 2015 AFL Grand Final.
This season, Gaff played only three matches, having been dropped after a challenging performance against Port Adelaide in round one. He made a brief return to the senior side in rounds 11 and 12 against St Kilda and North Melbourne. Despite these setbacks, Gaff has remained one of the club’s most loyal servants.
Gaff's career hasn't been without its challenges. He missed the 2018 premiership due to suspension after an eight-week ban for an incident with Fremantle’s Andrew Brayshaw. Nevertheless, Gaff's contribution to the Eagles over the years has been immense, and he will be missed by teammates and fans alike.
The club has announced that Gaff will play his final games against North Melbourne in Hobart and a farewell match against Carlton at home, granting him AFL life membership as he reaches the 300-game milestone, including pre-season and representative matches.
Fans on both the east coast and in Perth will have the chance to bid farewell to Gaff in the coming weeks, with a strong turnout expected for his final home game against Carlton – grab your tickets above!
Delivering a massive blow to the Gold Coast Suns' finals hopes, West Coast clinched a 10-point victory with a final score of 15.7 (97) to 13.9 (87) in a hard-fought win that marked the first victory for caretaker coach Jarrad Schofield.
The Eagles were behind for most of the match. However, they stayed within striking distance throughout the night and executed a perfect late-game surge, kicking two crucial goals in the final five minutes. The crowd erupted in joy as the Eagles’ classic victory song echoed through the stadium, celebrating their first win since round 10 against Melbourne and only their fourth win of the season.
Co-captain Liam Duggan played the hero’s role with a brilliant goal from a forward 50 stoppage, giving the Eagles a four-point lead. Jamie Cripps then sealed the deal with an incredible inside-out snap from the boundary with less than three minutes left, sending the home fans into a frenzy.
West Coast’s midfielders Tim Kelly and Elliot Yeo were outstanding, with Kelly racking up 29 disposals and eight clearances, while Yeo added 26 disposals and five clearances. Duggan, returning from a concussion, contributed significantly with 22 disposals, five clearances, and six inside 50s. Star defender Jeremy McGovern, back from a rib injury, played a vital role in holding the defence together as young players rose to the occasion to secure a memorable win.
Coach Schofield showcased faith in the younger players, fielding seven Eagles aged 20 or under, which paid off with one of the team’s most energetic performances of the season. Players like Jack Williams, Zane Trew, Harvey Johnston, Tyrell Dewar, and Clay Hall all had significant moments that contributed to the win. Williams, in particular, was influential in the third quarter, while Dewar's two goals in that period were critical.
The game was not without its challenges. Harry Edwards, who had been emerging as a key player, suffered a head knock and was placed in concussion protocols, leaving the Eagles short-handed in defence. For the Suns, Ben King overcame a shaky start with a couple of goals but was eventually contained by Jeremy McGovern as the game progressed.
This victory is a bright spot in an otherwise tough season for West Coast, providing a much-needed boost for the team and fans alike. It also offered a glimpse into the promising future of the club’s younger players, hinting at a potential resurgence in the coming seasons.
