Your Ultimate Guide to the NRL State of Origin

Your Ultimate Guide to the NRL State of Origin-1

The NRL State of Origin is a legendary clash known throughout the world of Rugby League. This is the showdown that no fan wants to miss. Think of it as the heavyweight bout of footy, where passion runs deeper than a Bondi Beach tan, and rivalries simmer hotter than a BBQ in summer.

Since its kickoff back in 1982, the State of Origin has been the stuff of legends, serving up epic showdowns, creating heroes, and dishing out drama that could rival any soap opera. So, grab a cold one, settle in, and let’s dive into the heart and soul of Rugby League.

What is the deal with the State of Origin rivalry?

It’s like the Hatfields and McCoys of Aussie footy but with a lot more muscle and a fair bit less moonshine. New South Wales and Queensland have been locking horns since footy shorts were shorter and mullets were all the rage.

Now, let’s rewind to a time when Queensland was feeling a bit like the underdog, and New South Wales was flexing its muscles. Back in the day, NSW had this sneaky advantage called pokies. It turns out that those pokies were a goldmine for NSW clubs, giving them the upper hand in snatching up top-notch players from Queensland fast.

But then came a game-changer – literally. In 1982, Queensland got a taste of sweet victory in the first-ever State of Origin showdown. Led by the legendary Arthur Beetson, the Maroons showed NSW who’s boss, and the rest is history. From that moment on, it was game on – and Queensland wasn’t about to back down.

Fast forward to today, and the rivalry is as fierce as ever. Mention Origin to a Queenslander, and you’ll see a glint in their eye that screams “game face.” It’s Braveheart meets footy.

State of Origin 2024

With Brad Fittler hanging up his coaching hat for the Blues, all eyes are on Michael Maguire to lead the charge. Can he rally the troops and put a stop to Queensland’s bid for a three-peat under the helm of Billy Slater?

  • Game 1 kicks off on June 5 at Accor Stadium, Sydney. With home-ground advantage on their side, the Blues will be looking to set the tone early and send a message to the Maroons.
  • Game 2 will take us down south to the iconic MCG on June 26. It’s a venue steeped in history, and you can bet the Maroons will be gunning to even the score on enemy turf.
  • Game 3 on July 17 at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane. Will it be a dead rubber, or will both teams be fighting tooth and nail for the series win? With Queensland boasting an impressive record at Lang Park/Suncorp Stadium, the pressure’s on for the Blues to bring their A-game.

Who’ll be donning the sky-blue jersey in the 2024 State of Origin?

With Michael Maguire taking the reins, the Blues are hungry to put an end to Queensland’s two-series streak, and the selection table is hotter than a summer’s day at Bondi Beach.

Let’s start with the backline. At fullback, it’s a no-brainer – James Tedesco is the man for the job. The Roosters dynamo has been in red-hot form, leaving no doubt about his place in the squad. Flanking him on the wings, we’ve got Panthers powerhouse Brian To’o and the lightning-fast Josh Addo-Carr. To’o’s been tearing up the field, while Addo-Carr’s speed is a weapon the Blues can’t afford to leave on the bench.

In the centres, we’re looking at a dream duo of Tom Trbojevic and Latrell Mitchell. Trbojevic’s attacking prowess is second to none, while Mitchell’s versatility and killer instinct make him a force to be reckoned with. And let’s not forget about our halves – Mitchell Moses gets the nod at five-eighth, with his pinpoint kicking game and playmaking skills making him the standout choice. Partnering with him, we’ve got Nathan Cleary, the maestro of the halfback position.

Now, onto the big boys up front. Payne Haas leads the pack at prop, with his sheer strength and aggression making him a nightmare for opposition defences. Joining him, we’ve got Reagan Campbell-Gillard, who’s been a rock for the Eels this season.

In the hooker role, Api Koroisau gets the nod, with his exceptional performances for the Tigers leaving no doubt about his selection. And last but not least, our backrow and bench. Liam Martin and Haumole Olakau’atu in the second row, bringing power and intensity to the pack. Isaah Yeo takes the lock position, with his tireless work rate and defensive prowess making him a standout choice.

On the bench, we’ve got Reece Robson, Cameron Murray, Junior Paulo, and Keaon Koloamatangi – a formidable lineup ready to wreak havoc when called upon. That’s who we’re tipping will be your 2024 NSW Blues squad. Let’s see how close we get when the actual team is announced!

Our prediction for the Maroons lineup in the 2024 State of Origin series

With Billy Slater at the helm, this squad is looking as fierce as ever, poised to clinch a historic third-straight series win. Leading the charge from the back, we’ve got Reece Walsh taking the fullback spot by storm. The young gun made waves in his Origin debut last year, and he’s set to be a force to be reckoned with once again. Flanking him, we’ve got Murray Taulagi and Valentine Holmes on the wings, both proven performers with a knack for finding the try line.

We’re looking at a dynamic duo in Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Selwyn Cobbo in the centres. These two young guns have been tearing up the field for their respective clubs, and they’re ready to make their mark on the Origin stage.

At the halves, we’ve got the indomitable Cameron Munster and the ever-reliable Daly Cherry-Evans leading the charge. Munster’s big-game experience and Cherry-Evans’ leadership make for a formidable combination that’ll strike fear into the hearts of NSW.

Up front, Lindsay Collins and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui lead the charge in the prop positions, bringing power and aggression to the pack. Alongside them, we’ve got Harry Grant at hooker, ready to wreak havoc with his lightning-fast plays out of dummy half.

In the second row, we’ve got David Fifita and Jeremiah Nanai, both explosive players who can turn the game on its head. And holding down the fort at lock, we’ve got Patrick Carrigan, a seasoned campaigner with the talent and tenacity to lead from the front.

On the bench, we’ve got Reed Mahoney, Thomas Flegler, Tom Gilbert, and Reuben Cotter – a formidable lineup ready to make an impact whenever called upon.

This is our call for the 2024 Maroons squad; let’s see how close we get!
