Pearl Jam
Go Media Stadium, Mt Smart, Auckland
Pearl Jam are finally returning to Australia and NZ for the first time since 2014, and they are bringing the PIXIES with them! Tickets are available here.
Hold onto your flannel shirts because Pearl Jam is about to shake up Australia and New Zealand with a double dose of their legendary grunge magic. The iconic alternative rockers, hailing from the rainy city of Seattle, have announced their twelfth studio album, "Dark Matter," set to drop on April 19, 2024. And if that wasn't enough, they've added two extra shows in Australia due to the frenzied demand for tickets.
Melbourne and Sydney, mark your calendars for November 18 and November 23, respectively, because Pearl Jam is bringing the thunder to Marvel Stadium alongside the foundational Boston indie rock band, The Pixies. It's like a dream lineup for any self-respecting '90s alternative music aficionado.
Boasting an impressive discography of twelve studio albums, numerous electrifying live performances, and a staggering 85 million albums sold globally, Pearl Jam emerges as a paragon of both critical acclaim and commercial triumph. Honoured with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, their impact transcends their music.
These shows promise to be a grunge pilgrimage, kicking off in Auckland on November 8 before making waves across the Gold Coast, Melbourne (twice for good measure) and wrapping it all up in the electrifying atmosphere of Sydney's Giants Stadium on November 23.
This isn't just your regular tour; this is a global spectacle spanning nine countries and 25 cities. From Vancouver's buzzing excitement to Madison Square Garden's iconic vibes, Pearl Jam is taking their sonic journey to places far and wide. For our friends across the pond in the UK and Europe, brace yourselves because Pearl Jam is making a triumphant return to the stage, including a gig at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The new album, produced by the multi-GRAMMY® award-winning maestro Andrew Watt, was crafted during an intense three-week session at Shangri-La Studios in Malibu. Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, and Matt Cameron immersed themselves in the creative process, aiming to deliver something meaningful and, in their own words, their best work.
Speaking of the album, Vedder expressed his excitement about this phase in their lives, saying, “We’re at this time in our lives when you could do it, or you could not do it, but we still care about putting something out there that is meaningful, and we hopefully think it is our best work.”
Ament echoed Vedder’s sentiments, emphasising the importance of the atmosphere set up by producer Andrew Watt. “A lot of that had to do with the atmosphere Andrew set up. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of our history as a band and how we wrote songs and as players.” The album cover also features a stunning display of light crafted by Alexandr Gnezdilov.
You'll want to get to these shows early to catch the Pixies (for the Australia leg). The Pixies are the enigmatic indie rock trailblazers who have left an indelible mark on the musical landscape since the late '80s. Heralded as the most influential band of the alt/rock movement during that era, the Pixies have become the sonic architects of a sound that resonates through the works of bands like Nirvana, Radiohead, the Strokes, Weezer, and beyond.
Their distinct "loudquietloud" signature sound has become a calling card, drawing in a new generation of music enthusiasts discovering and embracing the Pixies' unconventional charm. With quirky, catchy melodies as their forte, the Pixies have carved out a place in music history with seven studio albums, including the Gold-certified Surfer Rosa and iconic Platinum Doolittle – a record often hailed as one of the quintessential alt/rock albums of all time.
Their live shows are a testament to the band's electrifying yet lo-fi presence. Enticing sell-out crowds across the globe, a Pixies concert is a journey through seventy-five minutes of pure musical freedom. In a Pixies show, anything goes – classics and new gems, all delivered in a manner that's spontaneous and unpredictable. No two Pixies shows are ever the same, making each performance a unique experience for fans lucky enough to witness the magic unfold before their eyes.
