Originally planning a visit in 2020 alongside Jason Mraz to promote his 2019 album, "Once Upon a Mind," Blunt faced the unfortunate cancellation of the tour due to the COVID-19 restrictions that affected the global live entertainment industry.
Expressing his excitement about the upcoming tour, Blunt shared in a press statement, "Australia, I'm coming to get you. It's been a few years since I last toured Down Under, and you've always been like a second home to me. I cannot wait to be touring there again and playing for some of the best audiences in the world."
Blunt, known for his self-aware and emotive adult-contemporary style, first gained international acclaim in 2006 following the release of the debut album, "Back to Bedlam." The album featured chart-toppers like 'You're Beautiful,' 'Goodbye My Lover' (#3 in Australia), and 'Wise Men' (#11 in Australia). "Back to Bedlam" became a massive success in Australia, topping the charts, selling over 670,000 units, and achieving a remarkable nine times platinum certification.
During his earlier years, Blunt spent time in Australia, serving as a judge on The X Factor Australia in 2015 alongside fellow judges Chris Isaak, Guy Sebastian, and Dannii Minogue. James Blunt, born in Hampshire in 1974, is not just a singer-songwriter but a multifaceted individual with a rich background. He studied at Bristol University and later became an officer in the British army, where he served with Nato forces during the Kosovo War in 1999. Blunt's journey into the music industry began when he left the military in 2002 and released "Back to Bedlam" in 2004. This album, featuring the global hit "You're Beautiful," sold a staggering 12 million copies.
Blunt's childhood, spent in a modest holiday cottage on the estuary of the River Alde, was marked by simplicity and hearty fun. Raised in an army family, his holidays were characterised by the absence of luxuries, with the cottage serving as a shared space with various creatures. Despite the lack of amenities, his family enjoyed rowing and windsurfing, with the occasional highlight being a night out at the local fish and chip shop in Aldeburgh.
Due to his father's frequent relocations and the army's financial support for his education, Blunt attended boarding school at seven. While this provided stability through education, it also led to emotional detachment, as teachers became parental figures in the absence of his family.
James Blunt’s early musical endeavours involved playing the electric guitar and later transitioning to the acoustic guitar to write songs about his personal experiences and emotions. Despite his initial lack of musical prowess, Blunt's determination led him to pursue a solo career as a singer-songwriter.
The unexpected twist in Blunt's life came when he moved to Los Angeles to make an album and found himself living with the iconic Carrie Fisher, known as Princess Leia in "Star Wars," who quickly became Blunt's best friend. Despite initially not seeing much of her due to busy schedules, their friendship blossomed over late-night conversations. Blunt even dedicated a song on his new album, "Dark Thought," to the emotional moment he returned to Fisher's house after her passing.
Reflecting on his career, Blunt acknowledges the quirks of the music industry, describing it as childish, image-focused, and sometimes disconnected from the honesty he aspires to convey in his songs. Rejecting the notion of chasing after a "cool" image, he remains true to his earnest and authentic approach to music.
Deviating from his childhood dream of being a rock star with big hair and guitar solos. Instead, he stands with an acoustic guitar, touring the world and playing arenas. Despite the differences in his life now, Blunt emphasises that he is still the same person he was at nine – covered in mud and cherishing the grounding presence of family and friends.
