About this Event

The North Melbourne Kangaroos kicked off 2023 with a lot of hope, thanks to their new coach, Alastair Clarkson, who came in with a reputation for turning teams around. But, as it turned out, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for North Melbourne. The year was filled with distractions and drama, and they ended up in the bottom two yet again.

Despite the overall disappointment, there were some bright spots. Two rookies, Harry Sheezel and George Wardlaw, really stepped up and showed they have what it takes to make it big in the AFL. These young guns gave fans something to cheer about and some hope for the future. Plus, Nick Larkey had a stellar season, smashing 71 goals and earning himself All-Australian honours. He was a real standout and crucial for the team, especially with Cam Zurhaar sidelined for a good chunk of the year.

On the downside, Clarkson’s mid-season hiatus due to the Hawthorn racism investigation left the team in a bit of a lurch. His absence definitely affected the team's momentum, and many are wondering if he can fully commit and bring the stability North Melbourne desperately needs.

In the end, the Roos did manage to win one more game than last year and had a slightly better percentage, but a 17th-place finish was still pretty disappointing.

How is the North Melbourne Kangaroos 2024 season going so far?

Things aren't looking too rosy for the Roos. They’ve kicked off the season with six straight losses, adding to their string of tough years. Some of the players are hitting historic lows when it comes to their win-loss records. For instance, Bailey Scott has only nine wins out of 84 games, giving him a win percentage of just 10.7%. That’s the worst win percentage for any player with 50 games or more since before World War II.

Tom Powell isn't far behind, with six wins from 51 games. And poor George Wardlaw hasn’t snagged a single win from his 13 games. Even with some promising talent on the list, the Roos are struggling to find their footing.

Harry Sheezel is breaking records for the Kangaroos

Despite another tough loss for North Melbourne, their young star Harry Sheezel made headlines with an incredible performance against Geelong. Even though the Roos went down by 40 points, Sheezel's efforts stood out in a big way.

At just 19, Sheezel racked up a whopping 25 contested possessions, making him the first teenager in AFL history to hit that mark. On top of that, he gathered 36 disposals and even snagged a goal.

While the 17th-placed Kangaroos struggled overall, Sheezel's performance was a bright spot, giving fans something to cheer about. The game itself saw Geelong reignite their push for a top-four spot, with Tyson Stengle leading the charge for the Cats with three goals, including two crucial ones in the third quarter.

The Kangaroos showed some promise, especially in the first half, with strong runs through the midfield, but they couldn't maintain their momentum. Still, with young talents like Sheezel stepping up, there’s hope for better days ahead for North Melbourne.

North Melbourne Vs Geelong game review

Geelong's coach, Chris Scott, believes his team is "still building" as they edge closer to the finals with four games left. After bouncing back from a heavy loss to the Western Bulldogs, the Cats secured a solid 40-point win over North Melbourne, pushing them into the top four and extending their impressive eight-year streak.

Scott praised the standout performances of Tyson Stengle and rising star Ollie Dempsey. Stengle kicked three goals, including two crucial ones late in the third quarter to halt a North Melbourne run. Dempsey also shone with 18 disposals and a memorable goal early in the game when he cleverly knocked the ball free from Aidan Corr in the goal square. Scott highlighted Dempsey's rapid development, noting his excellent instincts and game sense despite not playing much junior footy.

On the other hand, North Melbourne's inexperience showed despite some promising moments. They had a strong first half, especially through the midfield, and even outperformed Geelong in hitouts, contested possessions, and total disposals. However, their lack of polish and inability to convert their opportunities on the scoreboard led to another disappointing result.

The North Melbourne Kangaroos' puzzle

The Kangaroos have an average losing margin of 51.4 points. Despite the high hopes that came with Alastair Clarkson’s arrival in late 2022, his record sits at 3-19, casting a bleak shadow over the team's short, medium, and arguably long-term prospects.

The pre-season had sparked a flicker of optimism among North Melbourne fans, especially after an impressive showing against Collingwood, which birthed excitement about ‘Northball’—a high-scoring, high-octane playing style. However, this concept has not yielded the hoped-for results. The Kangaroos' offensive struggles are highlighted by their AFL-worst scoring shots per inside-50 rate of 38.6% and their league-low 17.0 score launches per game. Defensively, the picture is even more dire. They have conceded at least 100 points in every game this season, highlighting their defensive woes.

North Melbourne's defensive one-on-one contest loss rate of 33.6% ranks second-worst in the AFL, and they concede an average of 19.9 free kicks per game, just ahead of Richmond’s league-worst 20.6. The departure of Ben McKay to Essendon last off-season left a significant gap, with the team opting to bring in recycled defenders Toby Pink and Bigoa Nyuon as replacements. Unfortunately, Pink's move from defence to attack against the Bombers and Nyuon's lack of impact has not provided the needed solutions.

Amidst these struggles, Charlie Comben has been a bright spot, equalling his most games in a season by Round 10. However, off-field issues involving Clarkson and Tarryn Thomas have only compounded the on-field challenges.

North Melbourne’s tactical approach under Clarkson has faced scrutiny, but the team's list still lacks critical elements. Historical free-agent misses further highlight their struggles, reminiscent of the Saints' similar woes in the player exchange market. The near-miss with Dustin Martin in late 2017, who could have been a game-changing addition, remains a poignant what-if for the club.
